How to claim it

  1. Open the offer. Go to chatgpt.com/codex/students
  2. Log in to ChatGPT. Log in to your ChatGPT account (or create one at chat.openai.com) — a free personal account works
  3. Start the claim. Click the "Claim now" button to start the verification flow
  4. Verify with SheerID. Enter your university email — SheerID checks it against OpenAI's partner school list for instant approval
  5. Upload proof. If automatic verification fails, upload a dated student ID and current-semester transcript proving enrollment
  6. Get your credits. On success, $100 (2,500 credits) is added to your ChatGPT account automatically — to your personal workspace if your account has several
  7. Start using Codex. Start using Codex for code generation, refactors, and agent-style coding tasks — credits draw down as you use it, and you can track the balance on your usage page

Who's eligible

Who can get the ChatGPT Codex for Students student discount?
Currently enrolled students at degree-granting universities or colleges in the United States or Canada, residing in the US or Canada at the time of claiming, age 13 or older. You need a ChatGPT account on any plan (Free, Go, Plus, or Pro) — a personal account is fine, no school-issued account required — and a university email, or proof of enrollment (student ID, current transcript) as fallback. One-time per student — existing credit grants cannot be claimed twice.
How long does ChatGPT Codex for Students student access last?
Credits expire 12 months after the grant date. One claim per student — no renewals or second grants.
Is the ChatGPT Codex for Students student discount available worldwide?
Limited to United States and Canada only — you must be enrolled at a US or Canadian degree-granting institution AND residing in the US or Canada when you claim. OpenAI's help documentation is explicit that Codex for Students is a regional program; other countries are not currently eligible. Do not use a VPN — OpenAI's verification detects IP/country mismatches.

What's included

Codex for Students is still live as of July 2026, with no end date announced. Verified US and Canadian university students get $100 in ChatGPT credits — 2,500 credits — specifically for use with Codex, OpenAI's coding assistant that handles code generation, multi-file edits, and IDE/CLI coding tasks. It works on any ChatGPT plan, including Free and Go; no paid subscription required. Verification runs through SheerID: enter your university email for an automatic check, or upload a student ID and current transcript if needed. Credits apply automatically to your ChatGPT account (your personal workspace, if you have several) and expire 12 months after the grant date. One claim per student.

  • $100 in ChatGPT Codex Credits2,500 credits are added directly to your ChatGPT account and apply to Codex usage — code generation, multi-file edits, repo-aware refactors, and IDE/CLI agent tasks. These are ChatGPT account credits, not API credits.
  • Works on Free, Go, Plus, or ProYou don't need a paid subscription — the grant funds Codex on any ChatGPT plan, including Free. If you already pay for Plus or Pro, the credits stack on top of your plan's included Codex usage.
  • SheerID VerificationVerification uses SheerID against OpenAI's partner school whitelist. Most students verify instantly with their university email; manual upload of a dated student ID and current-semester transcript is the fallback.
  • 12-Month Credit WindowCredits stay valid for 12 months from the grant date — plenty of runway for a semester or two of coursework and side projects before expiration.
04

Academic integrity

📘Check your school's AI coding policy
Many CS programs restrict AI assistants on graded assignments, especially intro courses where learning the fundamentals is the point. Codex is fantastic for personal projects, side work, internships, and open-ended classes — but read your syllabus and course policy before using it on homework.
🎯Use it to learn, not to skip learning
Codex is most valuable as a faster feedback loop — explain what generated code does, ask why an approach was chosen, try alternative solutions. Copy-pasting code you cannot explain wastes the grant and builds no skill.
05

Fine print & gotchas

  • US and Canada only — enrolled at a US/Canadian degree-granting institution AND residing there when you claim. VPNs get flagged by OpenAI's IP/country check.
  • One claim per student, no renewals. Credits cannot be shared, transferred, or sold.
  • Credits expire 12 months after the grant date; any unused balance is lost.
  • Credits land in your personal workspace — the one tied to your EDU verification — not in team or workspace accounts.
  • ChatGPT profile name must match your student ID, or SheerID rejects the verification.
06

Common questions

Is this offer still available? Is there a deadline to claim?
Yes — as of July 2026 the offer is live with a working claim flow, and OpenAI has not announced any end date or claim deadline. That said, vendors have been tightening student offers lately (Cursor ended its free year in June 2026), so if you're eligible it's worth claiming sooner rather than later. Once granted, your credits last 12 months.
Who is eligible?
Currently enrolled students at degree-granting universities or colleges in the US or Canada, residing in the US or Canada when claiming, age 13+, with a university email or the ability to upload a student ID and current transcript.
What can I use the $100 credits on?
Codex specifically — OpenAI's coding assistant — inside your ChatGPT account. Credits cover Codex usage: code generation, multi-file edits, IDE/CLI agent tasks, and repo-aware work. They are ChatGPT account credits, not API credits.
How far does $100 actually go?
The grant is 2,500 credits, and Codex tasks draw down credits based on OpenAI's Codex rate card (roughly, bigger and longer agent tasks cost more than quick generations). For typical coursework — debugging, refactors, explaining code, small projects — that's months of regular use. Heavy agent-style workloads on large repos burn through it faster.
How long do the credits last?
12 months from the grant date. After that any unused balance expires. One claim per student — no renewals.
What if my school is not recognized?
If the automatic email check fails, SheerID lets you upload a dated student ID plus a current-semester transcript. Make sure your ChatGPT profile name matches the name on your documents exactly.
Do I need ChatGPT Plus or Pro? Can I combine the credits with a paid plan?
No paid plan needed — the grant works on ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, or Pro. If you do pay for Plus or Pro, the $100 in credits stacks on top of the Codex usage already included in your plan.
How does this compare to GitHub Copilot's free student offer?
They're different shapes: [GitHub Copilot Pro is free for verified students](/github-copilot-free-pro-students/) as an ongoing subscription (renewed while you're a student), while Codex for Students is a one-time $100 credit grant. They also live in different places — Copilot inside your editor via GitHub, Codex inside ChatGPT and its CLI/IDE integrations. Nothing stops you from claiming both; see all [coding & programming student deals](/categories/coding-programming/).
Is this available outside the US and Canada?
No. OpenAI runs separate, different student programs in some other countries (e.g., the Student Plus Referral pilot in Australia and Colombia), but Codex for Students credits are limited to US/Canadian universities. If you're elsewhere, [GitHub Copilot's student offer](/github-copilot-free-pro-students/) is worldwide — or sign up for [deal alerts](/deal-alerts/) to hear when regional programs open.
