What's included

Zed is a fast, Rust-built code editor with AI assistance and real-time collaboration built in from the start. Since March 2026, currently enrolled university students get the Pro plan free for one year — including $10/month in AI token credits (double what regular Pro subscribers get) and unlimited edit predictions. Verification is quick: sign in with a GitHub account that's at least 30 days old and confirm your university email. After the year is up, your account simply downgrades to the Free plan — you're never auto-charged.

  • Free Zed Pro for 12 MonthsEverything in Zed Pro at no cost for a full year — normally $10/month. The plan stays active for the whole year even if you graduate during it.
  • $10/Month in AI Token CreditsMonthly token credits for AI assistance with hosted models — double the $5/month that regular Pro subscribers get. Usage is capped at the included credit (no surprise overage billing), and you can bring your own API keys at no extra Zed charge.
  • Unlimited Edit PredictionsUnlimited AI-powered edit predictions as you type, versus the 2,000 accepted predictions cap on the Free plan.
  • Real-Time CollaborationBuilt-in collaboration with multiple cursors in the same file, shared terminals, and voice chat — pair on assignments without leaving the editor.

Fine print & gotchas

  • Free for 12 months, then downgrades. After one year the plan auto-downgrades to the Free plan — no auto-charge, but Pro perks end.
  • GitHub account 30+ days old required, plus a valid current university email for verification.
  • 18+ and currently enrolled at an accredited university — enrollment is checked at application time.
  • AI credits hard-capped at $10/month. No overage billing or spend limits for students; bring your own API keys for unlimited use.
  • Claude Opus excluded. The plan includes all hosted AI models except Anthropic's Claude Opus (own API key still works).

Common questions

What if I graduate within the year?
You keep the Student plan for the full 12 months. As long as you're a current student on the date of your application, the plan remains active for one year regardless of graduation.
What happens after the 12 months end?
Your account automatically downgrades to Zed's Free plan — you're not auto-charged. The Free plan still includes 2,000 accepted edit predictions and unlimited AI use with your own API keys.
Why do I need a GitHub account?
Zed uses GitHub sign-in as part of student verification, and requires the account to be at least 30 days old to prevent abuse. You sign in with GitHub, then confirm your university email.
My university email domain isn't recognized — what do I do?
Zed verifies domains against JetBrains' open-source database of university domains. If your school isn't listed, you can submit your domain to that database yourself. For other issues, email education@zed.dev — they respond within 72 hours.
Which AI models are included in the student plan?
All of Zed's hosted AI models except Anthropic's Claude Opus, per Zed's plans documentation. Usage is capped at the included $10/month in credits — students can't buy extra hosted usage, but you can bring your own API keys (including for Opus) at no extra Zed charge.
Do international students qualify?
Yes. The program is explicitly designed to work for students worldwide — you need to be at least 18 and currently enrolled at an accredited university, anywhere in the world.
